Springfield School and Specialist Technology College were no strangers to Yearbooks, but the annual project soon became a laborious task with teachers being forced to take on the work themselves. The Head of Year 11, Dee Jackson, saw the difficulties faced putting the book together, deciding to use the yearbook creation process as an enterprise activity for work related learning, therefore utilising and developing the skills pupils had already learnt.
To adhere to QCA guidelines (section 9), Springfield approached Book-Builder - who offers an online yearbook creation facility - and created a yearbook scheme of work tying in with the curriculum and fulfilling the enterprise element of the work related learning programme. The scheme of work linked work related learning to citizenship, literacy, ICT and art and design.
How? Well, Book-Builder deals directly with the pupils. An editorial team is assembled with each member taking on a specific job role, like Editorin- Chief or Chief Photographer. Other key responsibilities include: proof reading; arranging and running meetings; advertising; book sales; writing effective captions and prose and meeting deadlines and team work as examples.
Book-Builder relies on pupils to use their own ingenuity to design to create their book. Dee Jackson enthused: “With Book-Builder, the pupils have to take responsibility for the whole process, which allows them to develop key skills that they will rely on in their future working environments. It is really encouraging to see them taking on their roles with commitment and enthusiasm”.
