Harnessing Technology: Next Generation Learning Strategy launched
Learners of all ages need the chance to use technology to support their learning said Jim Knight, Minister of State for Schools and Learners, Department for Children, Schools and Families, as he launched the revised Harnessing Technology Strategy in July at the ICT for Education conference in Birmingham.
Harnessing Technology 2008 was launched following consultation with education and skills professionals. Becta, the Government body for technology in education, updated the strategy on behalf of the Department for Children, Schools and Families, and the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills. Becta are now tasked to ensure that the ambitious strategy is delivered by 2014.
The revised strategy sets out a commitment to ensuring every school, college, university or training provider is ‘technology confident’, placing emphasis on this being achieved through engagement with learners and parents and the professional development of teachers and trainers.
Talking about the launch, Jim Knight said:
“Becta’s Harnessing Technology: Next Generation Learning Strategy published today reflects our huge ambitions for the country. We want every educational institution to harness technology’s potential, every teacher and student to use it confidently. Children and young people must have access to high-quality technology to enhance their studies – be it at home or in school.”
Bill Rammell, Minister for Lifelong Learning, Further and Higher Education, said:
“Technology has the potential to transform the lives of students, opening up new worlds and enabling them to study when, where and how they choose to. This is true for any student – the child just starting out at school, the postgraduate doing cutting edge research and the adult updating skills in the workplace.”
